From the\u00a012 to 15 March 2025<\/strong>\u00a0invited the\u00a0ITQ GmbH<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0in cooperation with the Canary Islands\u00a0Dr Stetter ITQ<\/a>\u00a0986 people interested in technology<\/strong>\u00a0from the\u00a0the whole world<\/strong>\u00a0to the\u00a0SMART GREEN ISLAND MAKEATHON<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0to Gran Canaria. The MAKEATHON is the\u00a0International Innovation Festival<\/strong>\u00a0ITQ GmbH, with the aim of inspiring young people to take an interest in technology and to come up with innovative ideas on the topics of\u00a0Digitalisation<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0Sustainability (Smart & Green)<\/strong>\u00a0to take forward. Whilst\u00a0546 young students and representatives of well-known sponsors<\/strong>\u00a0solutions for, amongst other things, the\u00a0sustainable logistics, recycling processes, smart mobility and agriculture<\/strong>\u00a0were working, were able to\u00a0440 children and young people<\/strong>\u00a0from Spanish educational institutions to demonstrate their skills at technical workshops. The SMART GREEN ISLAND MAKEATHON strengthens the\u00a0Technical expertise across all generations for a sustainable future\u00a0<\/strong>and brings young talent together with businesses. In this way, it helps to tackle the current shortage of skilled workers and enables new training programmes to be developed.<\/p>\n

The SMART GREEN ISLAND MAKEATHON took place in the exhibition hall at Infecar de Feria\u00a0546 participants from 36 countries<\/strong>\u00a0together \u2013 including\u00a0204 representatives from industry, research and academia, as well as 342 talented young people from 73 international educational institutions<\/strong>. For four days, interdisciplinary teams worked on industry challenges in the fields of smart automation, green logistics, AI and the circular economy. They developed sustainable solutions such as\u00a0plastic-free packaging made from banana fibres, PET recycling for industry, modular water metering systems and autonomous vehicle concepts for waste management logistics<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

In the\u00a0MVTec Challenge: \u201eAutomated Waste Detection\u201c<\/strong>\u00a0The teams developed a solution for the automated detection and removal of rubbish. Among other things, a robotic vehicle was fitted with a USB camera for object recognition and infrared sensors for obstacle detection. In addition, a scoop for collecting rubbish was designed using a CAD model and developed through several prototype stages to reach its final design.<\/p>\n

The team led by\u00a0Murrelektronik<\/strong>\u00a0developed a\u00a0automated process for recycling PET bottles<\/strong>. The plastic was shredded. The resulting granules were used for overmoulding electronic components. Robotics and mechatronics automated the process to enable an efficient circular economy. A digital product passport helped to trace the recycled materials.<\/p>\n

In the\u00a0igus Challenge<\/strong>\u00a0it was all about a\u00a0automated \u201eSmart Greenhouse\u201c<\/strong>. The team developed a system that uses a ReBeL cobot and image processing software to determine the ripeness of fruit. This software-controlled concept demonstrated its potential for sustainable vertical farming with a low carbon footprint. A 3D\/AR demo brought the solution to life.<\/p>\n

In order to\u00a0A passion for technology<\/strong>\u00a0To encourage them from as early an age as possible, the MAKEATHON also offered a wide range of activities for children and young people. More than\u00a0440 pupils<\/strong>\u00a0were able to build on their knowledge and enthusiasm for technology this week and take part in\u00a023 technical workshops<\/strong>\u00a0take part, including robot programming and Minecraft Education. In addition,\u00a0Solar-powered boats, cleaning robots, hydroponic systems and demonstrators<\/strong>\u00a0from the\u00a0EU-funded research project\u00a0\u201eEduDemoS\u201c<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0built for renewable energy from wind, solar and hydro power. The workshops were organised by the\u00a0Gerda Stetter Foundation<\/strong>\u00a0\u201eTechnology is fun!\u201c<\/strong><\/a>, the Canary Islands\u2019\u00a0The Sergio Alonso Foundation<\/a><\/strong> as well as German-speaking universities.<\/p>\n
