Agile System Engineering – Agile Development in accordance with ISO/IEC 15288

Why agile systems engineering is crucial for complex systems

ITQ supports companies in the development of complex technical systems by combining agile engineering methods with structured systems engineering approaches. At the heart of our approach is the customisation of classic systems engineering processes in accordance with the ISO/IEC 15288 standard, combined with agile development processes that enhance responsiveness to changing constraints. Agile systems engineering therefore forms the basis for the seamless and consistent development of mechatronic machines and plant.

„The biggest challenge is not choosing a technology, but making an informed assessment of its impact on the system as a whole.“

Structured system development using agile methods

The development of mechatronic systems is becoming increasingly complex. In many companies, established systems are becoming the norm; however, requirements change continuously as projects progress, and coordinating the mechanical, electronic and software components is becoming increasingly time-consuming. At the same time, the pressure to innovate and the range of variants are on the rise.
The effective use of AI in engineering requires structured and formal documentation.

This is precisely where agile systems engineering comes into play: requirements, functions, system architecture, test specifications and, in particular, digital twins are developed iteratively and continuously reviewed. This allows change requests to be incorporated at an early stage, developer feedback to be implemented directly, and systems to be developed consistently, step by step.

The key here is the combination of a clear understanding of mechatronic systems and agile development cycles.
Digital twins enable the system to be analysed at an early stage using AI. AI becomes a sparring partner.

FAQs – Agile Systems Engineering

What is agile systems engineering?
Agile systems engineering combines traditional systems development with iterative, agile methods to enable the flexible implementation of complex systems.
This approach enables controlled and flexible development, particularly when requirements change or the system is highly complex.
It improves transparency, reduces risks and enables the early validation of system functions and architecture.

Life Cycle Engineering defines the structure across the entire life cycle, whilst Agile Systems Engineering describes the iterative implementation within that structure.

Above all, dynamic requirements, coordination issues between disciplines and high project complexity.
ITQ integrates agile methodologies into existing development processes and ensures structured yet flexible system development.
